DSR room check — before you apply

Hot take

Banks don’t only ask “how much do you want?” They ask “how much of your income is already promised to debt?

That’s DSR energy.

Not financial advice. Each bank’s model differs. Our tools are educational.

DSR in one line

DSR ≈ (monthly debt payments ÷ gross monthly income) × 100%

Many lenders get uncomfortable as you approach ~60% — not a law of physics, a common comfort band.

Try it live: DSR room check → then Use this in fit check.

What counts as “debt payments” (roughly)

Often included Notes
Existing loan instalments Car, personal, housing (as bank defines)
Credit card commitments Banks may use a % of limit or min pay model — their rules
Other fixed financing As shown on CCRIS / application

Your grocery budget is not DSR — but if instalment kills grocery money, you still lose in real life. Pair with jimat playbook.

Worked example (illustrative)

Item RM
Gross income 5,000
Car + other loans 800
New personal loan instalment to test 450
DSR now 800 / 5000 = 16%
DSR after 1250 / 5000 = 25%
Room to 60% 0.6×5000 − 800 = RM2,200 max extra instalment band

Still not approval. CCRIS, employment stability, and bank policy decide.

Before you multi-apply

Every application can leave a hard enquiry footprint. Shopping five banks in one week is not a flex.

  1. Estimate DSR
  2. Shortlist 2–3 products on /personal-loans
  3. Apply once (or sequentially if truly needed)

Bottom line

DSR is the “can you breathe?” metric. Pass it on paper and in real life — then compare loans.
