Not medical advice

This guide helps first-time parents stay calm and organised. It does not diagnose why a baby is crying or replace your clinic, paediatrician, or A&E. If you are unsure, call a clinician early — one “extra” call is better than waiting in panic.

Why crying feels like an emergency

Long crying spells make new parents Google everything at 2 a.m. Common non-emergency reasons include hunger, tiredness, wet nappy, wind, overstimulation, or a growth-period cluster of feeds. Illness and pain can look the same from the outside — so use a checklist, not a random social media cure.

Hub shortcut: Mum & Baby → Baby unwell?

60-second calm checklist

Check What to note
Nappy Wet or soiled? Red skin?
Feed Last feed time · usual amount
Temperature Room + baby’s feel (use a thermometer if you have one)
Clothes Too many layers / tags / tight waist
Sleep Overtired vs under-tired cues
Parents Have you eaten / drunk water / can someone swap in?

Do one quiet routine: feed → gentle wind → hold → dim lights. Avoid stacking ten “hacks” at once.

Red flags — get help now

Seek clinic / paediatrician / A&E urgently if you see:

  • High-pitched constant cry that is not like their usual cry
  • Fever (especially under 3 months)
  • Rash with fever, or purple spots that do not fade
  • Hard breathing, blue lips, or very floppy / hard to wake
  • Projectile vomiting, green vomit, or no wet nappies
  • You fear you might shake or harm the baby — put baby down safely and get human help now

Never shake a baby. If you need a two-minute reset, place them on a safe surface and step away while still hearing them.

What not to do when panicked

  1. Do not switch milk brand or stage because of a supermarket promo while baby is unwell
  2. Do not give adult medicine, alcohol wipes “remedies”, or unprescribed herbal mixes
  3. Do not buy three mega packs of a new diaper size at 1 a.m. “just in case”
  4. Do not trust one TikTok diagnosis over your clinic

Milk stage and brand changes belong with your clinician, not a flyer.
