How to Compare Credit Cards in Malaysia Without Losing Your Mind
A step-by-step Malaysia credit card comparison method — spend map, goals, fee maths, gifts last, worked example, Priceory quiz, done.
The problem
Bank sites are designed like theme parks. You entered for a card. You leave with a tote-bag fantasy and no idea what the annual fee is.
Let’s fix the process — five steps, no brochure cosplay.
Not financial advice. PDS + apply-time T&Cs are canon.
Step 1 — Map your real spend (not aspirational you)
Grab last month’s statements / e-wallet history. Rough is fine:
| Bucket | RM / month | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Groceries | AEON / Lotus’s / 99 / etc. | |
| Fuel | ||
| Online | Shopee, Lazada, subscriptions | |
| Dining | ||
| Travel | Flights, hotels, Grab | |
| Bills | Utilities, telco (if on card) |
Circle the top two. Your card should win there — not on “golf weekend in theory.”
Priceory habit: if groceries are top, compare shelf prices before caring about 1% cashback — search.
Step 2 — Name the goal out loud
Pick one primary:
- Simple cashback
- Travel / miles
- Islamic product
- First card / building discipline
- Welcome gift (side quest only)
Cheat sheets:
If goal = “free airpods energy,” re-read: Welcome gifts, honestly
Step 3 — Score cards like a group project
| Score 0–5 | Weight | What “5” looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Fits my top spends | Heavy | Bonus categories match last month |
| Still good after fee | Heavy | Net rewards > fee without fake spend |
| I understand the rewards | Medium | Explain it to a friend in 30 seconds |
| Gift is realistic | Medium | Min spend you’d hit anyway |
| App / statements don’t hate me | Light | Alerts work, portal usable |
Delete anything that only wins on “vibe.”

Step 4 — Priceory as your desk
- Open /credit-cards
- Quiz / filters → shortlist 2–3
- Compare fee / rewards / gift side by side
- Open bank apply page → read PDS once without skimming
- Apply once (not five banks in a weekend)
Partner pages update faster than blogs. Trust apply-time terms.
Step 5 — After approval (the unsexy sequel)
| Day | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1–7 | Alerts on. Card only for planned categories. |
| 1–30 | Auto-pay full statement. No experiments. |
| 90 | Rewards − fees. Keep or cut. |
| Month 11 | Fee waiver reminder if year-1 free |
If the 90-day number is sad, downgrade or cut. Loyalty to a bad card is not a personality.
Worked example: Mei Lin’s 20-minute compare
| Her facts | |
|---|---|
| Spend | RM2,200 groceries, RM350 fuel, RM400 online |
| Goal | Cashback, no portal homework |
| Behaviour | Full pay every month (6+ months on debit first) |
| Card | Why shortlist? | Why maybe not? |
|---|---|---|
| A | Grocery % + sensible cap | Year-2 fee needs calendar |
| B | Low fee, boring 1% all-spend | Lower peak cashback |
| C | Huge gift | Min spend needs lifestyle transplant |
Mei Lin scores A and B on the table, ignores C, applies to one. She still compares Milo packs on Priceory before leaving home. That’s adulting.
Common comparison traps
| Trap | Fix |
|---|---|
| Five applications in one week | One apply after shortlist |
| Gift-first decision | Gift last |
| Ignoring caps | Effective-rate maths |
| Revolving balance “for points” | Payoff plan |
| Cash advance “emergency” | Emergency fund, not plastic |
Plot twist: grocery prices still matter
Cashback on a trolley you overpaid is cosplay jimat.
Do this too: search · Pantry Jimat · Jimat playbook
Priceory desk checklist (print-mental)
Open Credit cards and refuse to apply until every box is honest:
- [ ] Top two spend categories written down
- [ ] Goal named (cashback / travel / Islamic / first card)
- [ ] Fee year-2 known
- [ ] Cap / exclusions known for bonus rates
- [ ] Gift evaluated last (gift guide)
- [ ] Full-pay auto-pay possible
- [ ] Only one application ready
If a box is empty, you’re still in theme-park mode.
What “good enough” looks like
You do not need the mathematically perfect card in Malaysia.
You need:
- Positive net after fee
- Categories you already spend
- Terms you understand
- Behaviour that doesn’t revolute balances
Perfect is the enemy of paid-in-full.
When to walk away from a shortlist
| Signal | Action |
|---|---|
| Min spend for gift > 2× normal month | Walk |
| Can’t explain rewards in 30 seconds | Walk |
| Year-2 fee needs fantasy lounge use | Walk |
| You’re stressed about approval | Stay on debit longer |
| Already in debt | Payoff plan — not new plastic |
Bottom line
Compare your spend to their rules. Not their billboard to your FOMO.
