Unlimited vs category vs capped — do the maths

The plot twist

That 5% cashback headline? Sometimes it’s 0.6% effective after the cap. Banks are not your group project partner.

Three styles. Pick one.

Type Nickname The pitch The fine print energy
A Steady drip Small % on almost everything Boring = beautiful
B Category boss Big % on groceries / fuel / online Only if that category is your life
C Hype + cap “Up to 8%!!” Cap is the main character

Type A — Steady / set-and-forget

For you if your spend is chaotic-in-a-normal-way (mix of everything) and you refuse to open another app “just to check points.”

Math you can do half-asleep:

Year ≈ rate × eligible spend − annual fee

Watch: the quiet exclusions (petrol, e-wallet top-ups, government — varies).

Type B — Category booster

For you if one category is huge — think petrol warrior or weekly hypermarket legend.

Math:

Bonus only counts in-category + correct merchant codes

Watch: “supermarket” might not mean your favourite chain’s MCC. Yes, it’s that nerdy.

Type C — High % , tiny ceiling

For you if you hit the cap without inventing fake spend.

Brutal formula:

Effective rate ≈ capped RM / total spend

Example (illustrative): 5% with RM20 cap on RM3,000 spend ≈ 0.67%. Suddenly Type A looks hot.

Decision tree (screenshot this)

`` Is half your card spend ONE category? YES → Type B NO → Do you enjoy reading T&Cs for fun? NO → Type A YES → Type C only if the cap is free money; else A ``

What to do on Priceory

  2. Shortlist cashback options
  3. Plug your last month’s spend into fee + cap maths
  4. Ignore celebrity faces

Bottom line

Cashback is only “best” when the effective rate survives contact with reality. Pick a style. Do the maths. Move on.
