US clothing and shoe sizes: a checklist before ordering online

An unfamiliar size label is easy to miss when you shop across borders. Before ordering for US delivery, check whether a number refers to a US, UK, EU or brand-specific size. Do not assume a product shown on an English-language page uses US sizing, or that the same number means the same fit across different brands.
Keep the label and the size system together
Record both pieces of information: the size and the system printed beside it. Check whether the chart is for the right product category and customer range. A generic conversion table can help you spot a mismatch, but the specific retailer's chart is the better place to confirm the variant you are buying.
Compare measurements, not just names
- For a garment, distinguish body measurements from measurements of the finished item. Check how the retailer says to measure and whether the units are inches or centimeters.
- Compare relevant dimensions with a similar item that already fits you. Consider intended fit, stretch, lining and how you plan to wear it.
- For shoes, look for foot length, width options and the chart for that model. Do not treat a length conversion as proof of a matching width.
- If two charts conflict, ask the seller which chart applies to the exact style or SKU. Save the answer with your order details.
Read the return rules for this item
Find out whether the item can be returned or exchanged, which date starts the return window and when the parcel must be sent back or received. Check requirements for tags, packaging and item condition. Read any exclusions attached to sale items or personal-use products. Keep the packaging until you have checked the item according to the seller's instructions.
For US delivery, confirm where the return parcel goes and who provides or pays for its label. If the seller offers an exchange, ask whether the replacement has a separate delivery charge and whether your preferred size is available. Do not order an extra size on the assumption that a return will be free.
Make one final variant check
Compare the selected size and color in the basket with the product page before paying. Save the chart and item-specific terms that influenced your choice. Priceory may link to the product level rather than a guaranteed size in stock; verify the variant at the retailer. See the US checkout comparison guide for checking charges alongside fit.
This guide explains a checking process. It does not guarantee fit or describe a universal return right. Priceory has not tried on or tested the products. The retailer's item-specific chart and current terms control the purchase. See our editorial standards.
